St Columbas School

Douglas, Cork

The Project

St Columbas Boys National School Douglas, Cork were keen to switch to energy efficient lighting but the costs involved in replacing all fittings was a major obstacle to pursuing further. Energy Sense Ireland were able to retrofit the entire school at a fraction of the cost, providing St Columbas with efficient lighting and impressive savings.

Implementation

In August 2010 Energy Sense Ireland retrofitted over 360 inefficient lamps using Save It Easy Inline T5 adapters. The installation was completed out of school hours and was completed within 2 days with no disruption to the everyday workings of the school. St Columbas availed of Energy Sense Ireland Public Sector Payment Scheme allowing them to make an upfront payment for the project and pay the balance over a 30 month period. They also switched both electricity and gas supply to Airtricity. Extra projects included outdoor LED street lighting and replacing 100 watt incandescent lamps in the building to Pharox 6 watt LED lamps.

The Savings

As a result of installing the Save It Easy® units, annual energy cost and product savings of €2700 and CO2 emissions savings in excess of 10 tones will be achieved. With a 3 year payback this installation was throughout the whole school reducing lighting costs by 45%. By switching energy suppliers to Airtricity, extra savings of 10% will be achieved on St Columbas electric and gas bills.

Client Comments

“We were able to re-direct our energy savings into our front line education budget. We now have new outdoor benches and bought new book stocks for our central library, which we couldn’t otherwise have done this year. The savings translated into direct benefits for our pupils. – who are always our prime concern Tom Wilkinson – Principle of St Columbas
